Ku-band Radar Altimeter Surface Wind Speed Algorithm
نویسنده
چکیده
An algorithm for the retrieval of surface wind speed from Ku-band altimeter backscatter coefficient is proposed. The algorithm was derived using two-month worth of ENVISAT altimeter backscatter data collocated with ECMWF model and buoy wind speeds. The algorithm was extensively verified for ENVISAT, ERS2 and Jason-1 altimeters. The algorithm performance is better than the “modified Chelton-Wentz” algorithm and the two-parameter algorithm implemented for Jason-1 altimeter. The algorithm was implemented for ENVISAT RA-2 on 24 October 2005. About a year of verifications afterwards showed better performance in terms of wind speed retrieval. The use of significant wave height as a second parameter for the altimeter wind retrieval algorithms is also discussed.

Impacts of Oil Spills on Altimeter Waveforms and Radar Backscatter Cross Section
Ocean surface films can damp short capillary-gravity waves, reduce the surface mean square slope, and induce ‘‘sigma0 blooms’’ in satellite altimeter data. No study has ascertained the effect of such film on altimeter measurements due to lack of film data. The availability of Environmental Response Management Application (ERMA) oil cover, daily oil spill extent, and thickness data acquired duri...
متن کاملThe Research on Ocean Surface Wind Speed Retrieval by Neural Network Algorithm for HY2 Altimeter
The neural network algorithm in this paper is applied to the ocean surface wind speed retrievals. Firstly, the Ku band backscattering coefficient (σKu) is considered as the input parameter to retrieve the wind speed and the retrieval precision reaches 1 m/s (root mean square error) for HY2 altimeter. Secondly, by introducing the Ku-band significant wave height (swhku), C-band backscattering coe...
متن کاملSatellite altimeter models for surface wind speed developed using ocean satellite crossovers
A large global compilation of altimeter and scatterometer satellite crossover samples is used to address altimeter wind speed inversion. The emphasis here is altimeter wind error due to sea state impacts. Numerous past studies have suggested that long-scale gravity waves, which do not adjust to wind as quickly as the short gravity-capillary waves, have a measurable influence on interpretation o...
متن کاملThe Mean-Square Slope of Ocean Surface Waves and Its Effects on Radar Backscatter
The mean-square slope (MSS) of the sea surface for upwind and crosswind is derived, based on Phillips’ equilibrium spectrum and the model herein on gravity–capillary wave spectrum. The MSS integrated from the above two spectra over high-frequency dissipation length (1 mm) fits the optical observations very well. The radar backscatter cross section (RBCS), calculated from specular reflection the...

The authors report the first results in studying the polarization anisotropy of the microwave backscatter from nadir observations provided by Jason-1 altimeter in both Kuand C-band. A small but clear wind direction signal for wind speeds above 6 m/s is revealed. These azimuthal variations of radar cross-section increase with increasing wind speed up to 14 m/s. The signatures then level off at h...
